SPCA Florida exists to eliminate animal suffering and to enhance the human-animal bond by engaging the entire community in the welfare and well-being of animals. We accomplish this by advancing model programs to promote the adoption of healthy animals, prevent dog and cat overpopulation, provide veterinary medical services for animals in the community, and keep animals in homes through relinquishment intervention strategies. Founded in 1979, SPCA Florida is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization headquartered in Lakeland. Dedicated to improving the lives of pets and people in the community, SPCA Florida provides caring, compassion, and hope to more than 4,000 homeless animals entering our doors each year.

The CAT PROTECTION SOCIETY was founded by a group of volunteers who saw the need for a no-kill animal shelter within the county. The original shelter opened in early 1997 in a building which had housed the Lake County Humane Society. The urgent need soon exceeded capacity, and a larger state-of-the-art shelter opened in 2006 as home for 400 plus cats. The new shelter is located in Eustis, Florida on seven rural acres. The facility consists of a fully enclosed main building which is connected to two large open-air pavilions which allow the cats to climb and experience the outdoors 24 hours a day. There are also separate areas reserved for kittens and young adults, and areas reserved for cats that have tested positive for feline leukemia. Each room and the cats/kittens in them are cared for and maintained by the employees and volunteers of the CPS. Each day the litter boxes are cleaned, floors are swept and mopped, the furniture is wiped down and fresh food and water is given. THESE ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES INCLUDE ANIMAL ACQUISITION, EVALUATION, VETERINARY CARE, FOSTERING AND HOUSING, REHAB AND TRAINING, AND ADOPTION INTO AN APPROPRIATE HOME OR SETTING. ADOPTION INCLUDES SCREENING OF POTENTIAL ADOPTERS AND FOLLOW-UP EVALUATIONS OF PLACEMENTS. THE ORGANIZATION SEEKS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF, AND RESPOND TO, ANIMAL NEGLECT AND ABUSE SITUATIONS, AS WELL AS EDUCATE THE PUBLIC REGARDING RESPONSIBLE ANIMAL OWNERSHIP AND ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUES.
