Puppies Behind Bars trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and for first responders, as well as explosive-detection canines for law enforcement. Puppies enter prison at eight weeks and live with their inmate puppy raisers for approximately 24 months. As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs, their raisers learn what it means to give back to society rather than take from it.

Our field work takes place in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo and involves a multi-pronged approach, including: (1) animal rescue, sanctuary, rehabilitation, repatriation and protection; (2) conservation education; (3) orangutan research; and (4) habitat protection, acquisition and restoration. In order to preserve forest ecosystems we empower local communities in Borneo through economic development and education initiatives. We raise awareness of orangutan and forest issues throughout the world through field research, the publication of books, scientific reports, articles, and newsletters, as well as lectures, conferences, events, workshops, and seminars.
