The Writers’ Trust of Canada was founded in 1976 by Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence, and David Young and our mission is to advance, nurture, and celebrate Canadian writers and writing. We strive to make Canada the best place in the world to be a professional writer, and to ensure that Canadian voices are heard. The Writers’ Trust puts more money into the hands of professional writers than any other non-profit organization or foundation in the country. With generous support from donors, we reward and celebrate the finest Canadian writers and writing with nine prestigious national literary awards; we offer scholarships to emerging writers; we support writers who contribute their brilliant work to The Walrus; we offer writers the opportunity to live and write for three months at Berton House, our writers’ retreat in Pierre Berton’s childhood home in the Yukon; and we provide emergency funding to writers in crisis through our Woodcock Fund grant program.

YWS is Etobicoke's singular emergency residence and referral agency serving homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24. The 30 bed Emergency Residential Program meets the immediate needs of the youth by providing safe shelter, crisis counselling, nutritious food, clothing and hygiene products. Residents are given access to life skills training sessions and workshops through YWS's Steps to Success and Housing Programs. An Employment Program aims to alleviate the obstacles youth encounter in finding and maintaining employment. A Stay in School Program offers longer-term accommodation for up to 20 youth while they focus on completing their education. Youth Without Shelter' s vision is to end homelessness, one youth at a time, one step at a time.

We provide compassionate care for individuals, their families, friends and caregivers facing a life threatening illness, extending through bereavement. Our services include a Palliative Care program, Bereavement Care program, Caregiver Support and Training.

The Ottawa Humane Society is a non-profit, community-based organization and a registered charity. We have a volunteer Board of Directors, drawn from our supporters and the community at large. Since 1888, we have been the leading organization providing a safe haven for sick, injured and homeless animals in Ottawa.

The John Howard Society of Alberta is a non-profit agency concerned with the problem of crime and its prevention. The organization takes its name and spirit from the 18th century humanitarian John Howard, whose name has become a symbol of humane consideration for prisoners. It was incorporated in 1949, and today the organization consists of six separately incorporated districts along with the Provincial Office. We believe that crime control is as much the responsibility of the community as it is of government. Through involvement with the John Howard Society, as members or volunteers, people in the community play an active role in the criminal justice process by providing programs for offenders and their families, ex-offenders, young persons and the public.

The LCHS is committed to the humane treatment of all animals and actively performs cruelty investigations in St. Catharines, Lincoln, Grimsby, Thorold and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Taking in over 4,500 animals each year and adopting cats to forever homes for only $25, the LCHS needs your financial support to continue our important work. The Caring and Sharing Exchange provides much-needed assistance to Ottawa residents facing economic hardship during the back-to-school and Christmas seasons. WRA, formed in 1979, rehabilitates injured and orphaned urban wildlife for release back to the wild. Its specialty is native birds but treats small mammals also. WRA speaks to children and adult groups about urban wildlife issues and ways to prevent common injuries. An average of 3,000 patients are admitted to its facility in Burnaby, BC every year.
